From the original series, to the movie specials featuring celebrity cameos, to the newer series and the live action movies. I also fucking love scooby doo and grew up on every piece of that franchise imaginable. The movie taught us that you never truly know exactly what’s going to happen, and you should never completely rule out possibilities. Someone can word that better than I but I think my point still stands. The move taught you to be skeptical even if your preconceived expectations based on observed evidence, that you always had to remain vigilant in your observations and nothing is ever exactly as it seemed. By the time the movie came out you had seen enough episodes to know it was always just a man in a mask, so you were never questioning the outcome or the circumstances. To me I see it as telling the exact same lesson just in the opposite way. Zombie Island redirects your mockery back at you, surprising you with its brilliant quality. Every bit of the world fits together to be compelling. Every character has an important contribution to the story, and every scene is fun. For the most part, characters act like normal people, although Shaggy and Scooby make a few too many silly mistakes. This lets them play off other characters who believe in the island more than they do. They spend a lot of this movie calling out cliches of past hijinks, and being thoroughly un-scared by the weirdness of Zombie Island. Scooby deserves all these moments: weirdly short Daphne, absurd yet hilarious lines of dialogue, or bending continuity in service of gags. By putting in so much effort, Zombie Island can get away with occasional eccentricity, or what you might call "so bad it's good". Besides, the film earns spots of bad animation with detailed, ambitious scenes elsewhere. Some of the visual humor is more bad animation than anything intentional, but those are funny in their own way. The visual jokes are playful and the spoken jokes have wit. Scooby and Shaggy get funny faces a lot, and some of the others end up looking funny too. All the Scooby-Doo gags you accidentally know are here, and they use them well. I laughed so hard during Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island. Not so famous I recognize any of their songs, but I know them. They even got a famous band to do a song.

I would have loved more songs or a full musical, but what we get rocks. Some delightful songs narrate the story at key points. There are some spots of 90s progressivism, like Daphne being the most successful of the group, or her being interviewed by fake Oprah. I love all animation, but appreciated being brought back to an era of vivid background paintings and late-90s attitude. Animation in this era had more physical paintings in it than today's cartoons. Instead of banking on pre-1998 nostalgia, I got 1998 nostalgia. Its modern comparison would be 2014's "Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery", which clearly banks on nostalgia from an aging Scooby-Doo fanbase to join up with the WWE. This is a direct-to-video Scooby-Doo movie from 1998. The next 70 are about proving it doesn't suck, while keeping the classic elements of Scooby-Doo alive.įor no reason, everyone involved in this movie tried. Maybe it doesn't suck, but the first 10 minutes of this movie are about how Scooby-Doo fucking sucks. I have never intentionally watched an episode of Scooby-Doo. It's a hustle, a masterwork, a magic trick, a PhD thesis. "Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island" drags a washed-up franchise into modern times, with impossible precision.
